4 signs you are a victim of age discrimination

As an older worker, you may face discrimination from your employer. It is against the law for your employer to discriminate against you because of your age. However, it may sometimes be difficult for you to tell that illegal discrimination is taking place.

Discriminatory practices are often subtle and take place over a long period of time. Here are some telltale signs you may be able to take legal action against your workplace for age discrimination.

1. Job reassignment

Are you suddenly doing different tasks now that you are a certain age? If your employer is limiting your authority or asking you to do low-level tasks, you may have a basis for an age discrimination claim. Your boss may simply be trying to replace you or force you to quit.

2. You hear comments regarding your age

Do not brush aside comments that may come across as funny or friendly. If your manager asks you when you are planning to retire, even in a seemingly playful manner, you should be on alert. Remind your higher-ups you do not have plans to leave soon. Get some co-workers to witness the conversations because witness statements can be invaluable to age discrimination lawsuits.

3. Hiring and firing trends

Do you notice your employer hiring a lot of younger people recently? Are older workers facing termination or buyouts at the same time? This is a huge red flag your workplace has a toxic problem with age discrimination.

4. No more raises or promotions

Are you suddenly not getting a raise but you notice your younger co-worker getting a huge financial reward? This could be a sign of age discrimination, particularly if you had a stellar year of great performance.

Do not let your boss push you around because you are getting older. If you notice any signs you are facing discrimination, be sure to document everything and speak to an attorney.
